Windstorm coverage day two
A flock of seagulls watches Sunday as waves crash onto Herring Cove Beach past Race Point Light in Provincetown. Rapidly moving clouds made eerie shadows race across the beach. Tim Caldwell
CAPE COD - A High Wind Warning continued Sunday for westerly winds behind the huge storm 25-35 G50+. These winds were capable of uprooting trees from still soggy ground and additional power outages were possible.
12:30 PM update: NStar has repaired most of yesterday outages. High Winds flipped a small unoccupied plane over at Barnstable Municipal Airport around 10 AM. Two people were injured in a late morning crash on Route 28 in Dennis by the Bass River Marina. Crews were just mopping up from that when they were called to a small fire in a light fixture in the ladies room at the CVS Pharmacy at the Patriot Square Plaza on Route 134 about noon. Its not clear if the storm was a factor. No one was hurt. This is the same sailboat we showed being pounded at the top of yesterday's coverage. Salvagers reportedly plan to bring in a large crane to lift the sailboat out to dry dock for repairs. Photo courtesy of Frank Paparo/NEVN.
Evening update: (final) The High Wind Warning expires at 6 PM. Breezy conditions will persist into Monday but the damaging winds are over. Nantucket Firefighters spent the day wetting down a stubborn wind blown blaze at the town landfill. Only scattered power outages were reported today and no other significant problems.

HARWICH - Two Harwich teens are accused of armed robbery and intimidation of a witness. The Times reports Ryan West and Shane Tefft both 19 of Harwich picked up an aquaintance. Agents from Mashpee Police and other local agencies together with the Cape Cod Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at the housing complex on Old Barnstable Road and recovered a small amount of cocaine along with drug paraphernalia and cash. Arrested was 27-year old Lance Quinery. Police also arrested 41-year old Sean Coppin, 38-year old Hiran Haskell, and 33-year old Michael Tiddy. Arrest warrants were issued for three other suspects who were not immediately located. Authorities hope the sweep will stop ongoing illegal activity at the complex which was becoming increasingly violent. Posted on 10/29 at 1:00 PM.

CWN Storm Center coverage-October windstorm
CWN Storm Center coverage of the October windstorm
CAPE COD - A powerful windstorm lashed Cape Cod Saturday. Winds gusted to 66 MPH. A high wind warning remained in effect into Sunday. Click here for official storm damage reports from the NWS.
12 PM update: Trees and wires have already been reported down in West Barnstable and some other scattered outages have been reported. A large sailboat broke loose in Hyannis harbor and was battered by large waves (top picture). Wet roads may have contributed to this late morning crash in Centerville at Skunknet Road and Ames Roads (pictured right). 82-year old Virginia Neal of Centerville was in serious condition at CCH. The other driver was not hurt. Falmouth Fire reported water almost covering Menaught Road. Photos courtesy of Frank Paparo/NEVN.
2 PM update: a serious crash was reported on Route 6 between exits 5 & 6 westbound in West Barnstable as a vehicle went off the highway and struck a tree about 1 PM. Rescuers reported having to use two sets of Jaws of Life for about 30 minutes to free one of the victims. The occupants were taken to CCH, one with serious injuries. Another vehicle rolled on its side about 1:45 PM westbound on Route 6 at the Yarmouth/Barnstable town line. Two occupants of that vehicle escaped serious injuries. Reports are continuing to come in of some trees and wires down in several towns.
4 PM update: about 3 PM Falmouth officials reported a car swamped in the Teaticket section of town. The occupants apparently had to swim to safety. About 3:30 PM Yarmouth rescuers were checking reports of a windsurfer in trouble in the Bass River area however he apparently safely beached although some distance further down the beach then he intended. Smoke was detected in the garage of the Harwich Police station a short time ago. Fire officials believe an electrical problem was to blame. There was no significant damage. Seawalls in many areas like this one in Provincetown are being buffeted by the high seas driven by winds that have now gusted to 66 MPH in Provincetown and Marstons Mills according to amateur radio operators. Some coastal roads along the upper Cape and Dennis area were closed due to flooding at high tide. No major structural damage has been reported but trees continue to come down and power outages are becoming more numerous and we are going to say they are now extensive. NStar crews are working to restore power as quickly as possible. Photo by Tim Caldwell.
6 PM update: A strong squall line moved north to south over the Cape after 4 PM. The heaviest rains are now just about over after about 1 to 1.5 inches fell though a few more downpours are possible. Winds have switched to the west and southwest and will diminish slightly overnight only to pick up again on Sunday. The squall line caused these trees to splinter like twigs in front of a west end Provincetown building that houses a real estate business. Luckily the winds blew the trees away from the house and the parked car-and no one was walking by at the time! NStar crews are continuing to repair outages as quickly as possible. Photo by Tim Caldwell.
11 PM update: An eerie calm this evening as the rains ceased and for a time the winds dropped off and it became very mild. Barometric pressures bottomed out at 29.09 or 985 mb. Most of the earlier extensive power outages have been restored by NStar with just scattered outages remaining especially in the upper Cape area where we learned burning wires came across fiberoptic phone wires and melted them knocking out 911 service on Nantucket. We received this photo from one of our readers taken in Woods Hole around 4:30 PM appearing to show a lonely driver trying to decide if a flooded road is passable. Hopefully he made the right decision and didn't wind up like the driver we reported on in the 4 PM update. Winds late this evening are now freshening out of the west at 25-35 MPH. Forecasters still expect the backlash winds on Sunday to be 30-40 with gusts to 60. The wind combined with soggy ground will again mean the possibility of uprooted trees and more power outages. CWN storm center will be monitoring the situation and report accordingly on Sunday. Photo courtesy of Aaron Bryant.
Reminder: daylight savings time ends tonight. Set clocks back 1 hour before going to bed. Remember to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Provincetown remembers the Patricia Marie disaster 30 years later
PROVINCETOWN - 30 years ago today a fishing disaster shook Provincetown to the core. The fishing vessel Patricia Marie sank with Captain William King and six crew members lost. Read the account of what is believed to have happened that day. In 1976 there were many wooden fishing trawlers still lining Macmillan Wharf, and anyone who drove or walked down the pier new instantly if the Patricia Marie was in port. The 50-foot wooden vessel sported bright Playboy bunnies painted on its bow sides. Captain King's son Christopher was a sophomore at Provincetown High School along with your editor. I clearly remember the school PA beckoning "Chris King to the office please". Of course no one knew why at the time but Provincetown was still a tight knit fishing village at the time and work quickly spread across the town and through the school of the tragedy casting a pall over the entire town. A few days later an overflow crowd jammed into Saint Peters Church, some forced to listen from outside or on loudspeakers in the Parish Hall, for a memorial service to the seven men lost. Chris King persevered through the tragedy and amazingly followed in his father's footsteps eventually skippering his own vessel interestingly named Second Effort even as the fishing industry began to wane. King doesn't go to sea much nowadays but still makes a living in the fishing industry. It would take months for the town to come to grips with what had happened but Provincetown has always been resilient in the face of tragedy. Friends and neighbors, some we probably didn't even know, seem to show up and help when someone needs it the most. Posted on 10/24 at 2:00 PM.
