Yarmouth Police nab two nighttime car thieves early Monday morning

Two suspects found GPS units, other electronics

WEST YARMOUTH - On Monday, August 30, 2010 at approximately 2:30 a.m, Yarmouth Police Patrol Investigator Christopher Van Ness encountered two suspicious males as they were walking in the area of the Englewood Beach parking lot on New Hampshire Avenue in West Yarmouth.  Knowing that numerous overnight thefts have occurred throughout West Yarmouth this summer, Patrol Investigator David Schneeweis arrived on the scene to provide back up and investigative assistance.

While speaking with the two males, Patrol Investigator Van Ness observed a GPS unit and several assorted electronic components in an open duffle bag. When the officers attempted to detain both subjects, one of them physically resisted and repeatedly pushed and shoved and tried to pull away.  Patrol Officer Christopher Marino arrived and officers were able to overcome the resistance and the subject was placed in custody.

Nathan D. Schofield, 20, of Partridge Valley Road in West Yarmouth and an unidentified 16-year-old male juvenile were charged as follows:

Nathan D. Schofield

  • Two counts of Felony Breaking and Entering

  • Two counts of Felony Larceny
  • Destruction of Property

Unidentified Juvenile

By using the memory function of the GPS units, Patrol Investigator Schneeweis was able to locate the owners and determined that both had been stolen sometime earlier in the night from unlocked vehicles parked in nearby neighborhoods.

Both suspects were placed under arrest and held overnight at Yarmouth Police Headquarters.  Both are scheduled for arraignment in the Barnstable District Court this morning.

Brewster Police seek man wanted for several recent crimes

Brewster Police seek man wanted in connection with several recent crimes

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the department

BREWSTER – The Brewster Police Department is seeking information regarding the whereabouts of a subject wanted for several recent crimes.  The party is identified as Noah Pond, 37.

On Wednesday, August 18, 2010, officers responded to a residence on Slough Road when the homeowner called to report that he arrived home and found a male subject standing inside his house.  The subject fled the area driving a late model Lincoln with a Florida license plate.  The vehicle he left in had previously been reported as stolen in Dennis.  A search of the area did not turn up a suspect at the time.

Noah Pond, 37, is being sought by the Brewster Police in connection with several recent crimes.

On Friday, August 20, 2010, a resident in the same area as the prior case, called to report observing a suspicious vehicle, which turned out to be the stolen Lincoln.  Brewster officers responded to the area and when an officer attempted to stop the vehicle, the operator fled, eventually abandoning the vehicle and fleeing into a wooded area on foot.  During the foot pursuit, the officer was able to identify the operator as Noah Pond.  After an extensive search of the area by Brewster and Harwich Police, along with assistance from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department K9 Unit, police were unable to locate Pond.

Officers located stolen property in the Lincoln that belonged to the homeowner who reported the break-in on Slough Road.  Police also found stolen property that was identified as belonging to a resident on Archie’s Cartway, whose home was broken into earlier that day (Friday, August 20th).  One additional item that was recovered was an electronic monitoring device that had been cut off.  A check of the serial number showed that the device had been assigned to Noah Pond for monitoring as a result of a prior criminal case.

The Brewster Police Department has obtained arrest warrants for Noah Pond.  Anyone with information relating to his whereabouts is asked to contact the Brewster Police Department at 508-896-7011.

Car crashes into house following Falmouth Police pursuit

FALMOUTH - On Friday, August 20, 2010 at 12:30 a.m., a Falmouth Police officer attempted to initiate a vehicle stop on a 2001 blue Mercedes  Benz for speeding on Trotting Park Road in Falmouth.  The driver of the Mercedes failed to stop for the marked unit with all blue lights activated and accelerated north on Trotting Park.  The officer engaged in a brief pursuit, but quickly terminated it as he approached speeds he deemed unreasonable for that roadway.  The officer lost visual contact with the Mercedes at that time.

The officer then located the Mercedes crashed into the side of an attached garage at 224 Trotting Park Road. The operator, the lone occupant of the vehicle, fled the crash scene on foot and an attempt to locate him by members of the Falmouth Police Department and the Barnstable County Sheriff's K-9 Unit was unsuccessful.

Based on evidence gathered at this point in the investigation, a high rate of speed was clearly a mitigating factor in causing the Mercedes to leave the roadway and crash into the house.

The crash is under investigation by the Falmouth Police Department and its members of the Cape Cod Regional Crash Team.
