While searching the man for weapons, an officer found a small circular container in the suspect's jacket pocket.

The above is an example of bath salts. Image courtesy of the DEA.

The label on the container read "concentrated bath salts 500mg" and held a white powdery substance. The officer also found a 1"-2" piece of straw in the man's pocket. The suspect, who police did not identify, told the officer he was high on bath salts purchased from a convenience store.

When placed in the back of the cruiser, the suspect, according to police, rolled from his stomach to his back while in a seated position and made "spontaneous" noises. From time to time, the suspect licked the window bars of the cruiser bashed his head against the back and side windows. The suspect's appeared to be full of energy and would occasionally begin to quiver and look around as if he were terrified of something.

The bath salts were confiscated and the suspect was transported to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation, police said.

The effects of such synthetic cathinones resemble those of amphetamines including ecstasy and cocaine. bath salts often contain mephedrone and methylenedioxypyrovalerone, also known as MDPV. Side effects include violent hallucinations, paranoia, rapid heart rate, suicidal thoughts, increased risk of heart attack and agitation.

Bath salts are currently legal in Massachusetts and are available at several convenience stores and gas station mini marts. Homeless men, MBTA officer thwart Harwich arson plot

Paid $1,100 to fire bomb West Harwich home for insurance money
Homeless men told they were to let the dog out first

The home on Riverside Drive in West Harwich.

A video of the property by David Curran

HARWICH - As we reported yesterday, Harwich Police are crediting a Boston MBTA police officer for listening to a homeless man's improbable tale and acting on it, a decision which saved this Harwich from flames.

As reported today in our Court Reports, Benjamin Parker, 26, 301 Marlborough St, Boston, was arraigned yesterday in Orleans District Court for attempted arson of a dwelling house; conspiracy; possession of explosives with intent to injure, September 22 in Harwich. Pretrial conference scheduled for November 1.

According to police reports, a Harwich police sergeant was contacted by a Massachusetts state trooper, regarding a report from Boston Transit police.

Two homeless men had been offered the job of burning down a house, by an individual who had "made donations" to them in the past near Kneeland Street in Boston.

The men agreed to complete the work (arson) for the agreed-upon price of $1,100. When one asked why the building had to be destroyed he was told, "for the insurance money," but they were to free a dog on the premises first.

Based on their report, the two were tailed by Boston and Transit police to West Harwich, where the Harwich sergeant had obtained a search warrant for 96 Riverside Drive.

When the man who'd contracted the fire brought the two there, he gained entry with a key, then displayed two five-gallon buckets of gasoline, two empty beer bottles and some rags.

He instructed them to pour gas throughout the building, then toss the bottles back inside once the house was engulfed.

Once he had left, the men contacted police. Parker was identified as the dog's owner, and the reporting party in a landlord-tenant dispute this past February.

SOUTH YARMOUTH - Wednesday afternoon, around 3:15 p.m., Yarmouth patrol officers responded to the reported theft of a purse and credit cards in the area of Mid Cape Collision on Old Town House Road in South Yarmouth, according to a Yarmouth police release. A woman told officers that while walking down Old Town House Road, she stopped to tie her shoes and inadvertently left her purse behind when she continued down the road. The woman realized she didn't have her purse and when she turned back, her purse was nowhere to be found.

The woman told the officers that she remembered seeing a man in a blue t-shirt in the area.  Three employees of Mid Cape Collision came out to check on the woman when they saw she was crying.  According to police, all three men saw the man in the blue t-shirt pick up the woman's purse, hide it under his shirt, then walk away. The men told their boss, John Vermette, a retired Yarmouth reserve police officer. Vermette had also seen the man walking in the area of Yankee Drive and was able to locate him and convince him to return to the car shop and speak with officers.

Officers placed the man, identified as Cameron D. Byers, 22, of 438 Old Town Road in Hyannis, under arrest and charged him with larceny and felony possession of stolen credit cards.  The purse and its contents, including the credit cards, were recovered from nearby bushes and returned to the woman, police said.

Byers was the boyfriend of Gina Giovangelo, who fled from the Barnstable Court House during her arraignment on vehicular homicide charges. Byers and another woman were arrested with Giovangelo at a Wareham motel in May 2010 and charged as accessories to the fact. Read that story on CapeCodToday.com here.
