18-year-old in critical condition after being struck by car in Yarmouth Monday

Victim flown to Boston Medical Center Monday evening

WEST YARMOUTH - An 18-year-old West Yarmouth girl was seriously injured after being struck by a car at the intersection of Buck Island Road and West Yarmouth Road in West Yarmouth last night. According to a Yarmouth police release, several Yarmouth police officers responded to the scene just before 6:30 p.m. Monday night. There they found the girl, identified as Chelsi Varney of West Yarmouth lying on the side of the road at the intersection.

First on the scene, Yarmouth officers provided emergency first aid until firefighters arrived and provided advanced life support for injuries reported to be life-threatening.  Varney was transported to the Mattacheese Middle School where she was transferred to a MedFlight helicopter and flown to Boston Medical Center, police said.

According to Deputy Chief Steven Xiarhos, the accident is under investigation and preliminary reports indicate that Varney was struck by a 2004 Honda Odyssey driven by Brian C. Gardiner of West Yarmouth. Gardiner was driving east on Buck Island Road and appears to have struck Varney after passing through the intersection.  Witnesses confirm that Varney was struck as she walked out into the street.

Chelsi Varney is listed in critical condition, according to Deputy Chief Xiarhos. She is currently a student at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
