Photo courtesy of Sotheby's International Realty. The Wall Street Journal reports that Rachel "Bunny" Mellon's private compound on 26-acres in Osterville is for sale.  The asking price is $28.7 million.  Mrs. Mellon purchased the property with her late husband banking heir Paul Mellon in the 1940s.

The property boasts a 7,000 square foot main house, a tennis court, a beach house, a detached loft studio, a seasonal dock, over 1,000 ft. of shorefront and classical greenhouses. In all, there are eight bedrooms and nine bathrooms.  Mrs. Mellon, an accomplished horticulturalist, who is now 101-years-old, is known for having redesigned the White House Rose Garden for Jacqueline Kennedy in 1961.  She also designed the gardens on the rolling Osterville estate.

The Oyster Harbors property, overlooking the Seapuit River, is available in its entirety or in individual parcels, according to the listing.

The estate is listed with Jack Cotton of Sotheby's International Realty who told the Journal, Mrs. Mellon has put the property on the market because she rarely uses it. It's a bargain at roughly $1 million per acre.
