I can't believe we're literally a week and a day away from Thanksgiving. As late fall begins to greet us with the holiday cheer of Thanksgiving, I cannot help but to notice how much holiday-oriented events we have to enjoy on Cape Cod. Here's hoping you get the opportunity to support our local schools, artisans and crafters here on Cape Cod as Thanksgiving approaches. Let's try to remember that more than anything else, this season is about enjoying time together with loved ones and staying active may help ward off those extra holiday pounds!

Have a great weekend, everyone...we do indeed have a lot to be thankful for! With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I wish you a happy Thanksgiving and hope you have a great one with your families...and don't forget to check out the movie schedule next week!

  • All aboard the Polar Express at Edaville USA.

    This weekend, there is a special weekend long activity that will be a great time for the whole family! The Polar Express at Edaville USA will be ongoing, Friday through Sunday evenings from 4pm to 9pm at Edaville USA in Carver. The Polar Express will come to life at Edaville this Christmas season! Inspired by the award-winning book by Chris Van Allsburg and the hit movie starring Tom Hanks, The Polar ExpressTM will transport pajama-clad passengers to the North Pole. There Santa will board the train and greet the children, each receiving their own jingle bell just as in the story. Hot chocolate and cookies will be served by costumed staff while guests enjoy a live reading and carols.

For Friday November 18, 2011:

  • The Provincetown Farmers' Market continues, thanks to the wonderfully mild weather we have been having! Get there from 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM in Provincetown.

  • HYCC Stroller Skating 09:30 AM - 10:30 AM at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center in Hyannis. It's a big hit with families in rinks around the country and HYCC is bringing it here to Cape Cod! All levels of skating ability are welcome! Kid-Friendly Music will be lowered to a volume level that is acceptable for babies ears! This is a great way for new moms and caregivers to get a workout that offers aerobic strength training and fun interaction with their babies, older children and other moms!!

  • Engage your preschooler in nature with this Mommy-and-Me style class. Songs, stories, role plays, crafts and hands-on explorations will be used to discover the world and develop cognitive, motor, and social skills. Each Small Fries: Animals in Motion - Ages 2-5 class focuses on a special animal or habitat. This is a great experience at Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary in Wellfleet from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM.

  • There are several good storytimes scheduled this time of the year.

    If you have a toddler and you're anywhere near Wellfleet, Toddler Town is a treat for the little ones from 10:30 AM - 1:00 PM at Wellfleet Public Library. The indoor gym opens up at 11am so the kids can run off that extra energy!

  • Another preschool and toddler activity available for children between the ages of 2 and 5 is Preschool Storytime at Eastham Public Library in Eastham at 10:30am. This activity will includes stories, fingerplays, songs, silliness and a crafts.

  • Green Briar Nature Center in East Sandwich is a great spot to take kids of all ages and they always have great programs. Critter Capers is a popular program from 10:30 AM - 11:00 AM. Participants get to visit with a naturalist and one of the animals to learn about life cycles, habits and habitats.

  • Story, Dance & Craft is hosted by Miss Tara and all kids are welcome to join in a fun storytime which includes a new story read aloud and making a creative craft. This event is from 7:00 PM - 7:30 PM at Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Hyannis.

  • For kids between grades 3 and 7, Rock Night at HYCC (Grades 3-7 only) is a wonderful weekly activity so many kids look forward to! It gives kids the opportunity to skate to the beat of popular music and socialize with their friends from 7:15 PM - 9:15 PM at The Hyannis Youth and Community Center.

On Saturday November 19, 2011:

  • Catch the last weeks of the Orleans Farmers' Market from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM in Orleans from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM. What a treat to have this farmer's market in November!

  • Head out to the 30th Annual Orleans Elementary School Craft Fair from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM at Orleans Elementary School in Orleans for a jump start on your holiday shopping!

  • Who doesn't love pie?

    Pre-Thanksgiving Pie Auction & Bake Sale! From 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM, the Coalition for Children presents the Toe Jam Puppet Band & Pre-Thanksgiving Pie Auction & Bake Sale at Oak Ridge School in East Sandwich.

  • Family StoryWalk Take a family stroll and read "Leaves," by David Ezra Stein at the same time! Start anytime between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the front entrance of the Falmouth Public Library on Main Sreet. Light refreshments will be served upon completion in the Children's Room. Storywalk was developed by Anne Ferguson to encourage reading, outdoor activites, and fun for families.

  • Holiday Faire 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM at the Waldorf School of Cape Cod in Cotuit. Step into a world of whimsy and wonder on Saturday November 19th, from 10 am to 4 pm as the Waldorf School of Cape Cod presents its 21th annual Holiday Faire. This year's event promises to be a magical combination of unique shopping opportunities, crafts & activities for children of all ages, delectable food, and lively performances by talented local musicians.

  • Live Animal Story Time is on again from 10:30 AM - 11:00 AM at Green Briar Nature Center in East Sandwich! Drop by and join a naturalist for a lively story of "Peter Rabbit" and friends and a visit with one of the animals featured in the day's story. Suitable for families with children ages 3 and up.

  • Saturday Family Science 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
    Green Briar Nature Center. The Science Cart houses materials for on-going science exploration for families with children ages 4 to 12 years. The cart will be staffed by a naturalist each Saturday afternoon throughout the year. Advance registration is required for each week's session. Call 508-888-6870.

  • For all you ice-skaters out there! Hyannis Youth and Community Center has Public Skate again from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.

Sunday November 20, 2011:

  • Enjoy what's left of this good weather out with your family! Take some time to plan that wonderful Thanksgiving meal and family gathering. Decompress, relax, take a nap. It's Sunday!

Fall is beautiful here on Cape Cod, and life is good as we see the leaves change color and gearing up for a nice long weekend as Veterans' Day approaches. There is certainly some fun stuff to do on Cape Cod this weekend and it's supposed to be a nice one, so I hope you can take the opportunity to enjoy some of the wonderful family programming we've got here...and have a great weekend! 

For Friday November 11, 2011:

  • The Provincetown Farmers' Market continues this week! Get there from 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM in Provincetown.

  • Cape Cod Children's Museum is having its Veterans' Day Fall Festival from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM. There will be activities for families to do throughout the day. From 11:00am-2:00pm, Kim Torres, of "elements etc." will be educating families on local cranberry bogs and teaching some early American games and Lori Lieberman will demonstrate how to make corn husk dolls. There will be other fall crafts for families to enjoy as well. Vendors will be spaced throughout the museum sharing their wares for parents to peruse and to do some holiday shopping while their children are at play. Sounds like fun and productivity all rolled into one!

On Saturday November 12, 2011:

  • Catch the last weeks of the Orleans Farmers' Market from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM in Orleans. What a treat to have this farmer's market continuing on into November!

  • The Hyannis Youth and Community Center is offering this fun, free event: Turkey Shoot: A Family Basketball Shoot-Out from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM at Barnstable High School in Hyannis. This is a fun basketball shooting contest in November that adults and their children enjoy together. The Parent/guardian is paired up with their child in age divisions. The team that shoots the most out of 10 foul shots wins a free turkey! Just in time for Thanksgiving!!!

  • Live Animal Story Time is on again from 10:30 AM - 11:00 AM at Green Briar Nature Center in East Sandwich! Drop by and join a naturalist for a lively story of "Peter Rabbit" and friends and a visit with one of the animals featured in the day's story. Suitable for families with children ages 3 and up.

You'll have to leave the kids at home--but what a great afternoon and a great cause!

  • Great Bowls of Fire Chili Festival will be put on by the Sandwich Kiwanis Club to support Cape kids! Enjoy chili tasting and live acoustic music with Amber Crowley, all to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod and a bunch of other Cape kids. Get out to sample chili from 25 VENDORS & VOTE ON WHO HAS THE BEST ONE! This event will be from 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM at The Sandwich Hollows Golf Club in East Sandwich. Buy tickets at the Boys & Girls Club, 31 Frank E. Hicks Drive, Mashpee, off 151 behind the Mashpee Police & Fire Stations. $15 for 1; $24 for 2! You can also get them at Eastern Bank in Sandwich or at Dr. Steven Robinson's office. This is an over 21 event.

  • Family Fun Night is on from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Tumble Time Gymnastics in Pocasset. Compete together as a family on our exciting obstacle course. Help one another climb over obstacles, jump in a potato sack, answer trivia questions, and have good times that will not be forgotten. Play an invigorating game of dodgeball with no-hurt balls. Your family can be a team in a game of Scattergories, Charades or other games. Kickball, healthy homemade snacks, dancing, musical chairs and more are included. Pre-registration is required. $30 per family. Bring friends and get $10 off your cost.

  • For all you ice-skaters out there! Hyannis Youth and Community Center has Public Skate again from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.

Sunday November 13, 2011:

  • There isn't much on the roster for today which I take as a gift to go out for a wonderful walk, bike ride or to a local museum, with no agenda and with the intent just to spend some unplanned time with the family!

Here's hoping you all have power after all the rain and wind over the weekend and thank goodness we didn't get snow! I love the cooler weather and I believe we have some sun in the forecast as the weekend approaches. This is a great weekend to get your yards all buttoned up before winter arrives-a great outdoor project for the whole family! We'll probably be doing a lot of that! It's a reason to work off all the candy that Halloween brought into our lives...and an excuse to get the kids out to work off some of that sugary energy! There is certainly stuff to do on Cape Cod this weekend so take the opportunity to enjoy some of the wonderful family programming we've got here...and have a great weekend!

For Friday November 4, 2011:

  • If you have a toddler and you're anywhere near Wellfleet, Toddler Town is a treat for the little ones from 10:30 AM - 1:00 PM at Wellfleet Public Library. The indoor gym opens up at 11am so the kids can run off that extra energy!
  • Another preschool and toddler activity is available for children between the ages of 2 and 5. Head out to Eastham Public Library for Preschool Storytime includes stories, fingerplays, songs, silliness and a crafts.  
  •  Green Briar Nature Center in East Sandwich is a great spot to take kids of all ages and they always have great programs. Critter Capers is a popular program from 10:30 AM - 11:00 AM. Participants get to visit with a naturalist and one of the animals to learn about life cycles, habits and habitats. This program, which is offered every Friday morning, is suitable for children ages 3 and up with an adult at Green Briar Nature Center is in East Sandwich
  • Hope you are hungry for spaghetti!

  • The Congregational Church of South Dennis is having its monthly Spaghetti Supper  at 6:00 PM. Head out to the Parish Hall at the Congregational Church of South Dennis  in South Dennis for yummy spaghetti and a little bit of catching up with your local community.
  • For $20/person, you'll get a yummy buffet and a wonderful Comedy Show at Salerno's in Onset Village. This event will began at 6:30pm and benefits the Junior Onset Bay Association (J.O.B.A.). The J.O.B.A. is a group of community minded youngsters between the ages of 13-18 who have participated in several events in both Onset and Wareham this past year.  The proceeds from this event will go toward funding a family in need for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
  • The YMCA of Cape Cod in West Barnstable is having its monthly Kid's Night Out  from 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM.  There will be a themed-activity followed by dinner and swimming.  This event is for children aged 6-10 and sounds like a great time for the kids and is a potential date opportunity for moms and dads!

  • It's the 4th Annual Barnstable-West Barnstable Elementary School Yard & Bake Sale, from 9am-2pm at Barnstable-West Barnstable Elementary School in West Barnstable. ! Early birds are welcome to shop 8:30am-9am for an admission fee of $10. This is a BIG sale with lots of items available at very reasonable prices. Kids clothes, books, movies, cds, sporting equipment, games, puzzles, baby gear, toys, household items, linens, furniture, adult clothing and books. The event raises funds to help pay for enrichment opportunities through the school's PTA.

Did somebody say bake sale?!?

  • Get a head start on your holiday shopping! The Marketplace Event  will include a silent auction, vendors, bake sale, free children's activities and free NY Life Child's ID. All this is happening at West Parish Family School in West Barnstable from 10am and 2pm.
  • From 10am to 3pm, Free Family Fun Day! Is a great event to enjoy at Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen in East Sandwich.  Free Family Fun Day is sponsored by HELP (Healthy Enlightened Lifestyle Programs), a Collaboration funded by the Weny Charitable Trust. Join us for a day of fun and healthy living. Walk the trails and make your own healthy snack to bring along. Move your body with family zumba, yoga and pilates. Explore your creative side with free workshops in mask making and creative drama. Taste in our famous jam kitchen. Featuring YMCA Cape Cod, Harwich Junior Theatre, Thornton W. Burgess Society, CHC - Community Health Center of Cape Cod and the Cape Cod Museum of Art.

  • This event, sponsored by the Coalition for Children and the Falmouth Public Library will feature activities, crafts and community readers.
  • Quashnet Elementary School in Mashpee will be hosting the Quashnet 9th Holiday Artisan & Craft Fair from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Enjoy the festive indoor environment with over 60 crafters: knits, jewelry, photography, painting, Indian crafts and much more. Find that special one of a kind holiday gift. Stop by our café for award winning "Chowda", and the bake sale for a holiday treat. Kids activities and great raffles too. All proceed from the fair go to support the Quashnet PTO.   • Canal Sharks Hockey Day--Try Hockey for Free!  Is happening between 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM at Gallo Ice Arena in Bourne.  This event is part of the Canal Youth Hockey "Get Hooked on Hockey" campaign. Registration begins at 9:30am. Canal Sharks Hockey have teamed up with the Boston Bruins, One Goal and USA Hockey to present Try Hockey for Free Day which is a free event for boys and girls, ages 4 to 9 who are interested in trying hockey for the first time. There will be free giveaways and free lunch sponsored by Sam's Snack Bar & Catering. Participants who have access to equipment are encouraged to bring it. Those without equipment are asked to bring a helmet (such as a bike helmet), a pair of gloves (they don't have to be hockey gloves), skates (some will be available) and most importantly, a smile.
  • Cape Cod Academy is having its Admission Open House  from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM. Get out and learn about what Cape Cod Academy is all about!

Show your support for the Bourne HS Soccer Booster Club during their meat raffle.

  • The Bourne High School Soccer Booster Club is having a Meat Raffle to Benefit Bourne High School Soccer at the Aptucxet VFW Post 5988 in Gray Gables at 4:00 PM.  Show your support of the Bourne High School Soccer Booster Club and buy raffle tickets to potentially win select hotel-grade meat packages, enjoy the silent auction, a 50/50 cash raffle, food, and beverages will be available.
  • For all you ice-skaters out there! Hyannis Youth and Community Center has Public Skate again from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.

Sunday November 6, 2011:

  • Nauset Regional High School in Eastham will host Dan Clark "The Singing Trooper" Benefit Concert from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM. Dan Clark and his wife, soprano Mary Colarusso will sing patriotic songs, Irish songs, ballads and show tunes. Enjoy this great family event.
