Exhibit commemorates the Cape's connection to Titanic
Marconi radio operator Matt Tierney picks up the message, "we have struck an iceberg and are sinking"
This week, in remembrance of the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center will take part in "Titanic 100 Years Later and Marconi's Wireless Technology" along with the Cape Cod National Seashore and the Falmouth Amateur Radio Association. The center will feature a special exhibit April 12 through 15. All activities are free and open to the public during this time.
"The Titanic, Matt Tierney and Marconi's Marvelous Invention" was written and produced by Ed Fouhy, with Christopher Seufert as associate producer and editor. See a sample of the film above. On April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic, an Olympic-class ocean liner, sank to her watery grave on the ocean floor after striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic on her maiden voyage. While 710 people were rescued, 1,514 perished in the disaster. Many don't realize the connection between the Marconi wireless station in Wellfleet and the Titanic. Wireless messages in the form of Morse Code sent from the Cape to the Carpathia triggered the rescue of the Titanic survivors.
The exhibit and activities during the week tell the story of the Titanic and wireless technology. The center will be open April 12-15 (10am to 4pm Thursday through Saturday and 1pm-4pm Sunday). On Friday, April 13 at 4:30pm, the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center will host the premier of a new film about Marconi radio operator Matt Tierney and his role in the tragic event at the Chatham Community Center on Main Street. Tierney was on duty at the Marconi radio station on Nantucket the night of the tragedy and was instrumental in the rescue of the survivors. Following the film, maritime historian Mark Wilkins will speak.
Additional events and demonstrations will be held during the week at the Cape Cod National Seashore's Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham and the preserved site of the Marconi wireless station in Wellfleet. A complete listing of events is available here.
The Chatham Marconi Maritime Center, at 847 Orleans Road in North Chatham, opens officially for the season on May 25. Call the center at 508-945-8889 or visit the website here for more information.

Photo by Heide Smith, courtesy of HelenCaldicott.com.Anti-nuclear activist Dr. Helen Caldicott will speak at Cape Cod Community College in West Barnstable on Wednesday, April 4 at 7 p.m. Named one of the most influential women of the 20th century by Smithsonian Institute, Dr. Caldicott will present, "Fukushima: Enough is Enough! The Medical Consequences of Nuclear Power" in the College's Tilden Arts Center on Route 132.
The relicensing of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant in Plymouth brings Dr. Caldicott to Cape Cod to speak on the dangers of nuclear power production. The Pilgrim plant has the same General Electric Mark 1 Boiling Water Reactor that failed at Fukushima Daiichi in Japan a little over a year ago. Entergy Nuclear, the owner of Pilgrim, has operated the plant for the last forty years. This spring, the company is applying to re-license the plant for continued operation. Several local groups are working to block the relicensing through the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Dr. Caldicott is the co-founder of the Physcians for Social Responsibility, an organization of 23,000 doctors committed to educating their colleagues about the dangers of nuclear power, weapons and war.
The Wednesday evening presentation is sponsored by Cape Codders for Peace and Justice, Cape Downwinders and the Pilgrim Coalition.
