Gosnold of Cape Cod to present at Boston "Meth Summit" Thursday

Summit to address current local and regional trends in the prevention and treatment of methamphetamine abuse among gay men

Gosnold staff member Scott Turton from Gosnold on Cape Cod will speak in the “Meth Summit” on Thursday, May 21, 2009, 9am-4pm at the Fenway Community Health Center, Boston, MA.  The summit brings together community members and service providers to learn about current local and regional trends in the prevention and treatment of methamphetamine abuse among men who have sex with men (MSM). 

The day-long summit will address basic information on methamphetamine, the epidemiology of methamphetamine use by MSM in MA and identify appropriate resources and services.

Methamphetamine or ‘meth” is a powerful and highly addictive form of speed has become an increasingly prevalent problem in the gay community.  Meth increases sexual libido and longevity and drastically lowers judgment.  Many gay men admit to having unprotected sex while taking meth, increasing the odds for transmission of HIV and Hepatitis. Prolonged abuse of meth can lead to devastating medical, psychological, and social consequences. 

Mr. Turton, a Gosnold at Provincetown Counselor will present on screening and assessment tools and clinical experiences at the Provincetown Gosnold clinic with gay men dealing with methamphetamine addiction/abuse. The conference will assess the state wide prevalence of methamphetamine use and treatment for gay men.
