Gosnold offers grandparent forum on teen addiction in Falmouth on June 26th
Forum to take place June 26 at the Falmouth Senior Center
The number of grandparents raising grandchildren has increased dramatically in the last few years, as parental incarceration, addiction, poverty, abuse, service in the military and unemployment have all contributed to grandparents assuming part-time and full-time roles as primary family caregivers.
The Gosnold Reaching Out program, in collaboration with the Falmouth Substance Abuse Commission, will provide a special forum Friday, June 26 from 1 pm to 2:30 pm. entitled, “For GRANDPARENTS-ADDICTION AND YOUR GRANDCHILDREN (What Grandparents Need to Know).” At the forum to be held at the Falmouth Senior Center, grandparents will learn from Gosnold staff about addiction, prevention, how to discern signs of addiction and offer help to an addicted person.
Education is an essential tool in the fight against addiction. Adolescence often presents alarming challenges for grandparents in dealing with drugs and alcohol. Education, along with open communication, positive role modeling and early identification, are all powerful weapons in the fight against young addiction.
An open discussion with a panel of Gosnold experts will follow the forum. Light refreshments will be served. Community members of all ages are encouraged to attend this free program. For more information, call 508-540-6550, ext. 295.
