As two docs depart, Cape Cod Hospital to close Mashpee Oncology Suite
Departure of two staff physicians forces closure
As a result of the departure of the two staff physicians, Cape Cod Healthcare will close its medical oncology suite at the Mashpee Health Center, effective November 9, 2009. James C. Chingos, M.D., recently resigned, and Andrew Cederbaum, M.D., recently announced his retirement.
Letters were sent to about 400 patients last week, notifying them of the closure. About one-quarter of those patients are in active treatment at the center. The rest are being followed periodically as part of their post-treatment plan.
“As always, our first priority is patient care and safety,” said Susan Wing, Chief Operating Officer, Falmouth Hospital. “We will work with patients who are treated at the center to coordinate a smooth transition to a new provider.” Dr. Chingos, Dr. Cederbaum and the staff at the center will be involved in this transition and in recommendations regarding follow-up care.
Nine staff members will be affected by the closure. Union staff members at the center will have the option to bump into other positions within the Cape Cod Healthcare system, consistent with terms of the applicable collective bargaining agreements. Jobs within the CCHC system will be offered to others with qualifications that meet the organization’s needs.
CCHC remains committed to expanding and improving oncology services on the Upper Cape and is working on the details for the future Clark Oncology Center, which will be located on the Falmouth Hospital campus.
