Barnstable County Human Rights Commission hosts International Human Rights Day Celebration in Harwich

Sergeant Carrie Lopes of the Provincetown Police Department featured speaker

The BCHRC is hosting a celebration in observance of International Human Rights Day 2009 at the Harwich Community Center at 7 p.m. on December 10, 2009.

It is the great honor of the BCHRC to announce that Provincetown Police Department Civil Rights Officer Chair Sergeant Carrie Lopes will be the featured speaker. Sgt. Lopes has been with the Provincetown Police Department for 21 years and in that time has come to be at the forefront of Human Rights progress on Cape Cod. She has also served Provincetown Police Department as Domestic Violence Officer, Elder Affairs Officer, Sex Offender Management Officer and Public Information Officer. In addition, she has served her community as the Provincetown No Place for Hate Committee Chair.

The Cornerstone Award will be presented to four individuals recognized by their peers, community, and associates for fostering and supporting human rights concepts, and ideals, particularly for working to advance human rights and to eliminate discrimination in Barnstable County.

The BCHRC is also delighted to present the Wakeby Lake Singers of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, and presentations by Human Rights Academy Students of Nauset and Harwich High School.
