Mass. Highway Dept. stops work on Sagamore Bridge

Massive tie-ups, wasted gas, hurricane season, all may have played a part in the decision to halt construction at this time
It has been brought to our attention that the Massachusetts Highway Department has suspended work on the Sagamore Bridge. All four lanes will remain open until further notice.
Both the Cape Cod Canal Region Chamber of Commerce and the Sandwich Chamber of Commerce have emailed the media with that announcement.
We will add details to this story as further information becomes available.
Problem is already popping up in the blogs
One of our Cape Bloggers quoted a Massacusetts Highway official as saying "Changes could soon be made", but we don't know exactly what they are yet. Nothing has kind of come clearly into focus yet.''
Later, Jon Carlisle, a Mass Highway Department spokesman, said all lanes would remain open through at least this weekend. On Monday highway officials are expected to have a better idea of when the lane restrictions necessary to accommodate work on the $58 million flyover project will go back into effect.
Since the restrictions went into effect three days ago hundreds of angry drivers have complained to local authorities and MassHighway officials. Many insisted that the delays at the bridge ranged from two to three hours.
September, which is the most likely month for hurricanes on Cape Cod, is the worse possible time for lane restrictions.
