CCMA offers calligraphy class by former White House calligrapher
Former White House calligrapher, Rick Paulus, teaches at Cape Cod Museum of Art
Beginning September 19, CCMA's Weny Education Center is offering a new calligraphy class taught by Rick Paulus, former Chief Calligrapher under Presidents Clinton and George Bush, Sr.
Paulus has been a student and practitioner of hand-lettering for over thirty years. As a child growing up on the Cape, Rick drew inspiration from the beauty of Cape Cod in his art. After graduating from Harwich High School, Rick served in the Navy as a Persian Linguist. Even in Farsi, he continued to play with calligraphy. In 1990 Rick joined the U.S. Department of State as Calligrapher and Protocol Officer. Rick's creative and energetic work at the State Department soon came to the attention of the White House, and he was asked to join the Executive Residence of the White House as Chief Calligrapher.
After working at the White House for eight years and two presidents, Rick returned to Brewster to fulfill his life-long dream of managing his own studio on the Cape. With the establishment of Cape Lettering Arts in historic Brewster, Rick's desire to explore the art of calligraphy continues to new levels.
Based upon Ann Camp's classic instructional book, "Pen Lettering," students will study the foundations of the Roman alphabet as an introduction to hand lettering. Through the process of studying the foundational hand, students explore a variety of mediums, the evolution of our alphabet, layout and design considerations.
The class runs for 8 weeks / Tuesdays, Sept 19 - Nov 7 / 1:00 - 3:00 pm.
Members: $105; Non-members: $120; all levels
Contact the Cape Cod Museum of Art at www.ccmoa.org or 508-385-4477 x 12. The museum is located at 60 Hope Lane (off Route 6A) in Dennis.
