Artist Edith Vonnegut to Auction Million Moms Banner in Provincetown
Vonnegut to auction her Million Mom's banner "Stopping Bullets" in Provincetown
PROVINCETOWN--Edith Vonnegut and Kobalt Gallery plan to auction off an original hand-painted banner that the artist carried with friends in the Million Moms March on Washington, D.C. on Mother’s Day, 2000. The march grew out of a national grass-roots effort to raise awareness in favor of gun control.

The banner, "Stopping Bullets" by Edith Vonnegut.
Depicting a woman shielding her child from gunfire, the banner entitled “Stopping Bullets” is signed on the back by about 20 celebrities, including Susan Sarandon, Bette Midler, Melissa Etheridge, Courtney Love, Rosie O’Donnell, Reese Witherspoon, Raffi, Brooke Adams, Anna Quindlen, and Steve Buscemi.
Ms. Vonnegut, whose wry paintings feature powerful female nudes in action--doing housework, flying, and rescuing babies--has published a book of her paintings entitled Domestic Goddesses. Vonnegut plans to donate 100% of the proceeds from the banner auction to the Global Campaign for Education, an organization that promotes education as a basic human right.
“I have always planned to auction the banner off to raise money for a good cause,” said the painter, who lives with her husband and children in Barnstable and whose father is the author Kurt Vonnegut. “I also really love unusual venues to show my work.”

The artist, Edith Vonnegut.
Ms. Vonnegut’s banner will be on display during Women’s Week, October 7th through October 14th, in the lobby of the Provincetown Theater (238 Bradford Street, Provincetown, MA).
Bids for purchasing the banner will be accepted during the week via confidential ballot or by phone through the Kobalt Gallery.
The winning bid will be announced on Sunday, October 15th.
Ms. Vonnegut is represented by several galleries in Massachusetts and New York, including locally at Kobalt Gallery on Commercial Street.
“We’re always thrilled to participate in a convergence of art forms,” says Kobalt gallery owner Francine Dolimpio. “And if we can help to raise money for children in need, we will consider it a successful week.”
