Brewster Ladies' Library Announces Brewster is Reading

Town library announces community-wide reading project events

During the month of May, the Brewster Ladies’ Library is again sponsoring a town-wide reading program. This year’s theme is “Brewster is Reading… The Old Man and the Sea” written by Ernest Hemingway. While many of us may have once read this short novel as a requirement for a high school English class, the Library is  encouraging the entire community to read this Pulitzer Prize winning novel with fresh eyes.

The goal of community reading projects is to create a sense of civic unity through the shared experience of reading and discussing literature. Residents of all ages are invited to pick up a copy of this classic and participate in the month-long series of events. Several titles for younger readers have been selected as companion pieces: The Young Man and the Sea by Rodman Philbrick, and the picture book Swimmy by Leo Lionni.

Photos wanted for the Fish That DIDN'T Get Away display

In honor of its community-wide reading project, Brewster is Reading… The Old Man and the Sea, the Brewster Ladies’ Library is asking town members to submit photos for a special exhibit showcasing the skills of Brewster’s finest fishermen (and women!).

In the popular novel, the protagonist lands a huge fish only to lose it before making shore, but not every fish tale ends with an empty hook.

If you have a picture of you, or a family member with the fish that didn’t get away, bring it to the library and you could end up with bragging rights to Brewster’s best catch.

Please include your name, address, and phone number on the back of your picture, and they will all be returned unaltered.

For more information about Brewster is Reading…The Old Man and the Sea and the Fish That Didn’t Get Away display visit the library’s web site at http://www.brewsterladieslibrary.org or call 508-896-3913.
