Public Meeting Set to Discuss Orleans Transportation Center
Public Meeting set June 19 to Discuss Sites for Orleans Transportation Center
ORLEANS – The public is being asked for its ideas on the best place to locate a local transportation center in Orleans. The transportation center will provide access to and between services including the Cape Cod RTA’s Flex bus and the Hyannis to Orleans Breeze (H2O) bus, and the Plymouth and Brockton bus service.
Community needs and concerns will help determine the location and character of the facility. A presentation of the possible alternatives and a public discussion of them will begin at 6:30 p.m. June 19 at the Snow Library, 67 Main St., in Orleans. Possible locations have been identified, and draft criteria for the selection of a preferred site have been developed.
The Five-Year Public Transportation Plan for Cape Cod, published in June 2002, identified the need for a local transportation center in the Orleans area.
The center will be established in a way that will promote transit-oriented development, and support land use and other local planning concerns, as well as complement defined regional and village growth areas. The selected alternative may have amenities such as information kiosks, a shelter, restrooms, bicycle storage facilities, taxi stands and, where appropriate, parking.
The location and conceptual design of the preferred location will be defined in phase one. A second design phase will produce the final design and construction documents.
Funding for the study has been provided by the Federal Transit Administration and the Massachusetts Executive Office of Transportation. Construction costs are also expected to be provided by state and federal sources.
