“I’ve been leading this group for 24 years and the girls just keep getting better every year,” said Janice Hannah, the group’s director. “This isn’t the biggest choir we’ve had but it is certainly one of the best. I’m very proud of these young ladies. Their musicianship is extraordinary.”
“We love singing together,” said Brittney Raney, a soprano in her second year with the group. “We bring out the best in one another. And we love seeing how our audiences enjoy our performances. It really inspires us.”
The girls start at the beginning of the school year and receive intensive coaching and training from Ms. Hannah, one of the area’s top vocal teachers. Their repertoire includes a broad range of three- and four-part work, from classical to pop.
As the phrase suggests, the a cappella choir sings without accompaniment. Starting with a single-note cue from a pitch pipe, the girls quickly break into their trademark multi-part harmony. “It’s a real challenge,” said Hannah. “It requires a great ear as well as a great voice. They have to be very aware of what’s going on around them — pitch, tempo, dynamics. We work hard but the results speak — or sing — for themselves.”
