Spring Arts Competition Announced
A Juried Photography Exhibition with Jurors Larry Collins & Pia Schachter
PROVINCETOWN - The Schoolhouse Gallery presents a juried competition from May 16 through June 11, 2008. The competition is open to anyone who would like to submit works.
Show dates are Friday, May 16 through Wednesday, June 11, 2008. A reception for the finalists & winner will be held on Friday, May 16 from 6pm-9pm.
How to enter:
ON SITE
Drop off up to 1 work no larger than 5x5 feet to the gallery on Saturday, Sunday or Monday May 10, 11 and 12 between Noon and 4 PM. The fee to enter is $45 and should be submitted with the work. The fee is not refundable and may be submitted as cash, check, or credit/debit card. Your application should also include a file containing copies of your contact information, resume, and bio, a description of the piece (including title, medium, dimension, price and your representation). Do not submit original support materials, as these will not be returned to you. You may also submit a written description not to exceed 150 words to accompany your piece that provides information necessary for the jurors to gain understanding about your submission not evident from the piece itself. This could include information about your photograph's function or context. Do not include any opinion, speculation or other subjective information beyond what is essential for the juror's understanding of your work as it relates to this application. Works not selected for the show must be picked up on Friday May 16 or Saturday May 17 between 11 am and 4 pm. The gallery is not responsible for damage to work not picked up after these times.
BY MAIL:
You may also submit artwork through the mail by shipping your submission to the gallery so as to arrive on or by Monday May 13, 2008. Return shipping is the responsibility of the artist and must be arranged prior to submission.
DIGITAL:
You may submit a digital application through the mail. If you select this method send a CD of your image with a complete description of the work to the gallery by April 20, 2008. For digital submissions by mail include a description not to exceed 150 words that explains any pertinent information about your artwork to supports your application that will not be evident to the jurors. The jurors are not given biographical information about the artists during the selection of work, so please limit your description to information necessary for the jurors to understand your submission, if it is not evident from the piece itself. Do not include any opinion, speculation or other subjective information beyond what is essential for the juror's understanding of your work as it relates to this application. You will be notified by May 1 if your piece has been selected for the final jurying on May 15.
WHAT TO ENTER:
This competition is open to photography and to artwork generated from photographic images. All works submitted must be suitable for hanging, installation, or presentation without assembly. Artists will be responsible for any special installation and removal requirements, including equipment and hardware.
HOW TO WIN:
The jurors are given the task of selecting an exhibition that suits the gallery according to their criterion as it matches the submissions and any other considerations they deem significant. As such they must not only identify each piece's individual merits, but also consider its position in their overall exhibition. After they decide the exhibition they will select one 'best of show' winner who will receive a cash award of $500.00. The winner will be announced at the opening.
THE SHOW:
All works will be for sale through the Schoolhouse Gallery for the length of the show. Unsold works must be picked up on or by Wednesday, June 9 at 11:00AM. Storage for unsold works is not available.
THE JURORS:
LARRY COLLINS is a painter and photographer living and working in Provincetown. He studied painting at the University of Oklahoma (BFA), Indiana University, and the Massachusetts College of Art (MFA). He was an infantryman and combat artist for the U. S. Army in Vietnam in 1968-1969. He has been a professor of art at the Massachusetts College of Art, the University of New Hampshire, and Montserrat College of Art. He has collaborated on books of poetry and art with Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Eileen Myles. His work has been exhibited widely in the U. S. and Europe and is in many private and institutional permanent collections including the Worcester Art Museum, New York Public Library, Provincetown Art Association and Museum, and Boston Public Library. He has received artist's grants from the New Hampshire Council on the Arts and a Creative Arts Studies Fellowship for travel in Italy. He is the former director of the Driskel Gallery at the Schoolhouse Center in Provincetown and the current director of Larry Collins Fine Art, a gallery that specializes in photography and antiques.
PIA SCHACHTER is a photographer's representative and the owner of the agency MAMA, located in Boston Ma. Pia works with the newest visual talents as well as guiding the more seasoned photographers in bringing contemporary images to the advertising and editorial worlds. Pia was raised in Boston by a family of artist and advertising people. A former Art Director, Beauty Columnist and Photographer.
As a photographer she dedicated 6 years to documenting the young men of a musical movement known as 'Death Metal'. Schachter's work has shown at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, in the exhibition "Boys Behaving Badly", curated by Valerie Cassel Oliver. She has also shown at Allston Skirt Gallery Boston, MA with Jack Pierson for their show "Bad Boys", The Institute of Contemporary Art, Portland, ME and at the Schoolhouse Gallery in Provincetown. Her final showing of the "Death Metal" work was at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in the discussion called "Going To Extremes" along with William Pollack, author of "Real Boys".
