WHAT Announces Its 2008 Summer Season

WHAT announces the lineup for its 2008 summer season

Shows on two stages in Wellfleet; kids' shows too

WELLFLEET - Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater (WHAT) celebrates its sophomore year in the Julie Harris Theater and it’s 24th in the Harbor Stage with their opening the 2008 summer season. Six shows in the Julie; four in the Harbor; another premiere in the WHAT for KIDs tent; and a summer jam packed with special events, children’s acting camp, and the return of Shakespeare on the Cape.

Julie Harris Stage
This season kicks off in the Julie Harris Stage with Intimate Apparel by Lynn Nottage. Other production highlights in the Julie include the World premieres of John Kolvenbach’s Fabuloso and David Johnston’s The George Place. 2007 IRNE award winners Director David Wheeler and Max Wright (“Alf,” “WKRP in Cincinnati,” All That Jazz) bring Joe Orton’s What the Butler Saw and Shakespeare on the Cape take on Marivaux with Triumph of Love.

Harbor Stage
The Harbor Stage opens on June 4th with the world premiere of Eric Lane’s Ride, directed by Daisy Walker. Brendan Hughes, WHAT’s Harbor Stage Impresario directs action-packed shorts in Rolin Jones’ Shortstack (World premiere). Also in the line up Elizabeth Meriwether’s unsanitized The Mistakes Madeline Made and Mamet’s take on the one-night-stand in Sexual Perversity in Chicago.

Special Events
With one year-round season under it’s belt the Julie Harris Stage will host twice as many special events this season. In conjunction with the Cape Cod Chamber, WHAT celebrates the Artisans Trail with an Artisan Fair on the Grounds of the Julie Harris – Memorial Day weekend. In June the special fundraising events continue with a Conversation with Al Jaffee—the “Mad” Genius behind MAD magazine’s fold-ins. WHAT presents a program of Cape Cod Shorts with local authors and world-class actors reading classic and new fiction. On August 14 the 2nd Annual WHAT Award honors John Kolvenbach (Fabuloso, Love Song, Gizmo Love, On an Average Day). Finally, two extraordinary fundraising events planned for September: Election 2008 and Forces of Nature – in partnership with Wellfleet Conservation Trust.

WHAT for Kids
WHAT For Kids continues in 2008 with the world premiere of Stephen Russell’s adaptation of a Russian Folktale, Fool of the World and the Flying Ship. New to WHAT for Kids this season – day activities, Circus Camp on Wednesdays (ages 5 – 12) and Acting Camp on Saturdays (ages 10 – 15).

About WHAT
Founded in 1985, WHAT is nationally known as Cape Cod's most adventurous professional theater company. The Julie Harris Stage is located just next to the Wellfleet Post Office on Route 6. The original Harbor Stage is located on Mayo Beach next to the Town Pier. In the second year in the Julie Harris Stage and first year of year round programming, WHAT continues its mission to consistently seek out distinctive and provocative new works and to recruit artists with the skill, imagination and vision to realize those works in production.
