American Business Women's Association Awards Academic Scholarships to three Cape Women

HYANNIS - The Cape Cod Chapter of the American Business Women's Association (ABWA) awarded three academic scholarships of $1,500 each to three local women at the chapter's monthly meeting on August 12, 2008.

To qualify for a scholarship, candidates must live on the Cape or Islands, must have a GPA of at least 3.0 and must be at least a second year student in their program.  The scholarships were awarded to:

  • Megan Grandmont of Buzzards Bay, a 2006 graduate of Bishop Stang High School, graduated 7th in her class. She will be a junior at Boston College in the fall.  Megan is an English major with the goal of becoming a high school English teacher or professor of Victorian Literature.  She currently has a GPA of 3.948 and she has already received several awards:  Dean's List First Honors in her first two years and 2008 Sophomore Scholar.

Denise Dever, the chapter President said, "The Cape Cod Chapter of the ABWA congratulates these three extraordinary women and wish them much success in accomplishing their goals."

  • Samantha Pearsall of E. Falmouth will be a senior at Endicott College in the fall.  She is a member of the Honors Program at Endicott which requires a GPA of at least 3.5 and Honors Seminars.  Sam currently has a 3.83 GPA and is a Contemporary Journalism Major and Business Minor.  She currently has her own website www.escapecod.org and intends to work for a citizen journalism website when she graduates.  Over time, she wants to develop her website as a travel guide for tou rists and eventually publish a magazine about the Cape.  She has received many awards including being a Two Time Winner of the Honors Scholarship, the Presidential Academic Scholarship each year, Dean's List and several Endicott scholarships.  She is a member of Mortar Board, Communication Honors Society and Lambda Pi Eta.
  • Christie Paige of E. Falmouth will be a sophomore at Northeastern University in the fall.  She graduated from a Vocational/Tech school and worked as an LPN for several years before attending Cape Cod Community College to become a registered nurse.  She is now a nursing major,  pursing a bachelor's degree and maintains a GPA of 3.8 while being a mother to 4 children.  She eventually would like to pursue a Masters degree in nursing and work in a Medical Intensive Care Unit.  Christie is currently a nurse at Falmouth Hospital.

AWBA Members Debby Grant, Wendy Mullin, JoAnna Watson as well as Cheryl Armitage made up the scholarship committee.

ABWA's Mission is to bring together business women of diverse occupations and to provide opportunities for them to help themselves and others grow personally and professionally through leadership, education, networking support and national recognition. At ABWA new members are always accepted and welcomed.
