BREWSTER - The Brewster Ladies’ Library and Brewster’s Lyme Disease Support Group are jointly sponsoring a showing of the award-winning 2008 documentary film by Andy Abrahams Wilson entitled Under Our Skin: The Untold Story of Lyme Disease.
According to the film’s distributor, "Each year thousands go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, often told that their symptoms are 'all in their head'."
According to the film’s distributor, "Each year thousands go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, often told that their symptoms are 'all in their head'. Following the stories of patients and physicians as they battle for their lives and livelihoods, the film brings into focus a haunting picture of our health care system and its ability to cope with a silent terror under our skin."
Awareness and prevention is of utmost importance. According to Lyme Awareness of Cape Cod (LACC), there are many on Cape Cod and the Islands who are not properly diagnosed and treated for tick-borne diseases who go on to have dire consequences. Recently, Laura Mueller, a longtime visitor to Nantucket, was diagnosed with a tick-borne disease and came within minutes of dying. Read Ms. Mueller's story in the Nantucket Independent here.
The showing will be held on Tuesday, October 21st at 6:30 p.m. in the Library Auditorium. The film runs 103 minutes and there is no charge for admission. The Brewster Ladies' Library is located at 1822 Main Street (Route 6A) in Brewster.
Visit the Under Our Skin website here. And view the trailer on the site or at YouTube.com here.
An abundance of information is available on the web on sites such as the Lyme Disease Association and locally, the Cape Cod Extension. Read the Cape Cod Extension's "Tick Talk Summer 2008" report here.
