Cape Cod Community College Students Donate Proceeds of Class Charity Drive to Safe Harbor

Close to 500 items were donated to Safe Harbor, long-term shelter

Students in the Small Group Communication course (below, right), in collaboration with Papa Gino's at K-mart Plaza in Hyannis and on Route 28 in Centerville, donated close to 500 items of warm winter clothing, gift coupons and children's toys to Safe Harbor, a long-term shelter for victims of domestic violence. Over 20 students and friends joined the eight member Communications class on Dec. 17 in the Lorruso building as Safe Harbor representatives Lauren Pitz and Laura Bancroft arrived to pick up the boxes and bags filled with coats, hats, gloves, scarves, warm clothing, stuffed animals and children's toys as well as free- meal coupons donated by Papa Gino's charity and assorted gift certificates.

The charitable drive was the class response to a problem-solving assignment developed by adjunct faculty Regina Yaroch. Classmate Naomi Hurst came up with the idea of conducting the charitable drive and the group rallied behind the effort, creating donation boxes for the Papa Gino's locations and working to spread the word about the project.
