Clean energy training program short course in energy efficiency to be offered in March

The Clean Energy Training Program (CETP) is pleased to announce that the Energy Efficiency Short Course is scheduled to begin in March. 

The Energy Efficiency Short Course will cover topics such as:

  • fundamentals of building science
  • heat transfer
  • air flow
  • insulation methods
  • ENERGY STARŪ lighting, consumer products, windows and doors
  • domestic water heating, space heating and cooling,  materials and best practices
  • health and safety issues
  • career paths in energy efficiency, certifications, and industry choices

Instructors:

Kevin F. Galligan is energy efficiency program manager for the Cape Light Compact, Barnstable County's municipal electricity aggregator and program administrator of the ratepayer funded energy efficiency programs. He is also adjunct instructor at Cape Cod Community College teaching energy efficiency and conservation as part of a National Science Foundation grant awarded to the college. Kevin has over twenty-eight years of energy industry experience.

Bruce Torrey is a building and energy consultant with Building Diagnostics, which provides building analysis, technical support, and EnergyStar Home services for architects, builders, and weatherization contractors. He is a frequent contributor to The Journal of Light Construction and Home Energy magazine.

An on-site field exercise will provide instruction in:

  • performing a blower door test to identify air leakage and calculate air exchanges per hour
  • completing a thermal shell and general efficiency assessment of the home
  • identifying opportunities for improving comfort and efficiency 
  • assessing the ventilation rate and
  • identifying any possible safety issues

In addition to having strong analytic skills candidates for the class should have the ability:

  • to utilize math formulas to calculate building volume, area and algebraic formulas provided for energy load calculations
  • to sketch and dimension buildings and be familiar with construction drawings and specifications
  • to operate and interpret results of diagnostic tools

Participants will be required to take a math quiz during the first class to assess competency in these areas. 

Eligible candidates will be insulation contractors, heating contractors, duct work contractors and carpenters.  The CETP is geared towards building, electrical, HVAC and plumbing contractors, business owners and employees, and other individuals who are interested in gaining a higher level of professional training in the areas of photovoltaic and solar thermal technology and energy efficiency.

Classes will be held at the Mid-Cape Home Centers Complete Home Concepts Showroom on Rt. 132 in Hyannis.   Location for the field exercise will be announced in class.

Class will take place on:

  • Tuesday March 17th 2009, 6:30p.m.-9:00p.m.
  • Tuesday March 24th 2009, 6:30p.m.-9:00p.m.

During the third week the class will be divided into two groups for a field exercise. Participants will be required to attend either morning or afternoon sessions on Tuesday March 31st or Saturday April 4th, more information on the times and location will follow.

  • Tuesday April 7th 2009, 7:00p.m.-9:30p.m.
  • Tuesday April 14th 2009, 6:30p.m.-9:00p.m.
  • Tuesday April 21st 2009, 6:30p.m.-9:00p.m.
  • Tuesday April 28th 2009, 6:30p.m.-9:00p.m.

Attendance at all classes is required.  Participants who are unable to attend all classes should not enroll.
