Eastham Public Meeting: Proposed Brackett Road Rehabilitation
Proposed Brackett Road Rehabilitation Public Information Meeting to be held February 21st
EASTHAM - The Town of Eastham will be holding a public information meeting at 10am on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at the Eastham Town Hall, 2500 State Highway. The meeting will provide an opportunity for interested
parties to view plans and talk to public officials and designers about a proposed roadway rehabilitation of Brackett Road.
If funding cannot be assured for spring construction, Eastham will use its Chapter 90 roadway state aid funding to complete the project.
The proposed project consists of improvements to the section of Brackett Road between the Cape Cod Rail Trail and Route 6. Also included are updates to Brackett Road / Route 6 / Old County Road intersection. While primarily a repaving project, many other improvements have been incorporated into the job. ~Additional improvements being considered include the following:
- Construction of a sidewalk along Brackett Road and improved pedestrian crossings at Route 6. The proposed sidewalk is planned for the south side of Brackett Road. A proposed sidewalk on the north side of the road is planned as a separate project at a future date.
- Intersection improvements including the construction of turning lanes on Brackett Road and Old County Road at Route 6 as well as revised signal timing.
- Consolidation of curb cuts at the Village Green Shopping Plaza to improve safety and traffic flow ? the three curb cuts closest to Route 6 are proposed to be closed and a new curb cut constructed at the eastern end of the parking lot. A fence would be removed and minor grading changes would be made near the post office to connect the two existing lots at the plaza.
- Provision of a small paved shoulder and bicycle friendly edging (rather than vertical curb) along Brackett Road to make the road safer and encourage the use of bicycle traffic to and from North Eastham?s village center.
- Drainage improvements would be made to Brackett Road as well as a landscaped stormwater detention area just west of Holmes Road.
The intent of the proposed project is to provide improved traffic flow, better pavement conditions, and to create a safer environment for pedestrians and bicyclists. It is hoped that the proposed project can create a ?sense of place? for North Eastham and encourage greater foot and bicycle traffic to area businesses.
Construction for the proposed project is planned to begin in the spring and resume after the summer.
Questions on the proposed project should be directed to Neil Andres, DPW Superintendent at (508) 240-5973, between the hours of 8am-4pm Monday-Friday.
Additionally, Draft Plans may be viewed on the Eastham Town Hall website www.eastham-ma.gov and in the Planning Department in Eastham Town Hall.
