Attention Cape Teens: "No Prom" is Back!

Students ban together to raise money for Homeless not Hopeless, Inc.

No Prom is Back!

T

wo years ago, students at Dennis Yarmouth High School invited all the high school students on Cape Cod to a dress-down dance for a good cause to raise money for the refugees of Darfur, Sudan. They raised over $10,000 and, through syndications of the resulting news stories, showed the world that kids could give up something to help others.

This year, students from Cape Cod Academy and Chatham, Harwich, and Dennis-Yarmouth High Schools have banded together to throw one of the most ambitious fundraisers of the year--all to raise money for Homeless not Hopeless, Inc.  Homeless not Hopeless, Inc. works to transition people out of homelessness and the day-to- day struggle of life in the Hyannis shelters.

  • Because people are still spending a ton of money on prom and other luxuries even as the recession deepens.
  • Because another 8 people died on the streets of Cape Cod last year.
  • Because young people can save this money usually spent on fancy clothes and instead donate some dollars to help the homeless.
  • Because it will be a great time.

The students, led by Chatham’s Brittany Langlois and Katherine McMahon, Harwich’s MacKenzie Hamilton, DY’s Stephanie Fussel, and Cape Cod Academy’s Lillian Terry-Welsh have joined together to plan the most happening event for young people in this year’s spring calendar.

This event will occur at the Chatham Community Center on May 8, 2009 from 7-11 pm with a $20 donation expected at the door.  Fun will be had by all on any of the three main floors with a DJ and dancing on the top floor; Rock Band, Guitar Hero and Super Smash Brothers video game tournaments on the first floor side-by-side with a Texas Hold’em poker competition; and, on the gymnasium floor, the wildest collection of after-prom party toys, ranging from the inflatable obstacle course to the Velcro wall, to the Snatch-the-cash machine, to the mechanical bull.  All together for far more than $20 worth of fun.

All donations will be made at the door.  Any Cape Cod high schoolers and their highly respectable compadres are welcome.  Spread the word, and raise some funds for the homeless. All for a good cause!  May 8th, 7-11 at the Chatham Community Center.
