Public Forum on Mirant Power Plant Scheduled for Wednesday

Public Forum on the Future of the Mirant Canal Power Plant

SANDWICH - The future of the Mirant Canal Power Plant will be the topic of the second public forum sponsored by Cape Clean Air at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, at the Cape Heritage Rehabilitation Center, 37 Route 6A in Sandwich.

David Webster, the EPA Chief of the Permits Branch will discuss the proposed EPA requirement for cooling towers to reduce the negative effects that current water intake is having on fish and larvae in Canal waters. The cost implications of such a requirement may lead to the closure of the plant.

Carolyn O'Conner, of  ISO New England External and Legislative Affairs, will address the "Reliability Must Run" status of Mirant's canal plant. She will explain when and why the plant must run and the cost implications to rate payers.  These increased rates have amounted to some $350 million dollars over the last four years.
